- Sembol ve anlam ilişkisine dayanan sanat, üretildiği toplumların iç dinamiklerinin yanı sıra inançlarıyla, gelenekleriyle, kültürel birikimleriyle belirlenen bir görsel dil kullanıyor. Özellikle her coğrafyanın klasik sanatıyla ilgilenmek isteyenlerin, o coğrafyaların ilgili dönemlerinde sahip oldukları sembolik dili anlayabilmesi için kültür ve dinler tarihi hakkında bilgi sahibi olması gerekiyor. Yaklaşık on sekizinci yüzyıla kadar geçen süreçte Batı sanatında dini, mitolojik, tarihi konulara odaklanan eserler üretildiği de göz önüne alınırsa, Batı resmindeki anlama ulaşmanın kilidini açan anahtarın sembolleri ve motifleri bilmek olduğu açıkça görülüyor. Sanat tarihçisi Serap Yüzgüller'in yazdığı Sembol ve Anlam: Batı Resminde Kutsalın Temsili, Batı resmini anlam bakımından daha iyi değerlendirebilmek, resimlerde kullanılan sembolik öğeler aracılığıyla anlam katmanlarını zenginleştirmek suretiyle eserin anlatısının nasıl güçlendirildiğini görebilmek için gerekli bilgileri veriyor. Kitapta, ortak sembolik görsel dilini kutsal üzerinden kurup geliştiren Batı kültüründe Ortaçağ, Rönesans, Maniyerist ve Barok dönem resim sanatında sıklıkla kullanılan on temel motif inceleniyor. Sembol ve Anlam: Batı Resminde Kutsalın Temsili, kutsalı ifşa ve inşa ederken bu motiflerin nasıl kullanıldığına, nüanslarla onlara nasıl farklı anlamlar kazandırıldığına ve bir resme bu gösterenler doğrultusunda bakıldığında anlamın nasıl derinleştiğine dair bilgi sahibi olmak isteyen okuyucularla sanatsal, ikonografik, teolojik bir buluşma sağlıyor.
