Der Zoll in mehreren Städten entdeckte in Paketsendungen halb verweste Affenschädel, die aus Afrika hierher verfrachtet wurden. Die Dunkelziffer schätzen Experten sehr hoch. Warum werden weltweit geschützte Primaten und Körperteile dieser Spezies illegal importiert? Die Kriminalpolizistin Conni Wannot und ihr Freund Kenda Kabolike, Jurastudent aus Kamerun, können nach einer Afrikareise mit Informationen helfen. Riemenschneiders Nachforschungen alarmieren kriminelle Kreise und bringen ihn selbst in Gefahr. Ein Informant offenbart sich ihm. Er sei in die mafiösen Strukturen verstrickt gewesen, die sich um den Affenschmuggel gebildet haben und bereit, als Kronzeuge auszusagen. Bald wird dem Journalisten klar, dass es in Wirklichkeit um eine speziellle Form der Forschung über Organspenden geht. Die wird sogar mit Steuergeldern finanziert, aber einige Wissenschaftler wollen mehr tun, als erlaubt ist. So hat sich eine Organisation gebildet, in deren Umfeld es sogar eine illegale Klinik in Karlsruhe gibt.
