    Answer: I use my U.S. cleaner on all precious metals (gold, sterling silver, & platinum) and stainless steel, as well as all precious and semi/precious stones, except organic stones: opals (Australian and Ethiopian), turquoise, emeralds, tanzanite, onyx, lapis, and pearls; stones that are polymer coated/sealed, fracture or fissure-filled and/or heat-enhanced. Though diamonds are hardest on the Mohs scale, I don’t use it on colored diamonds, and the GIA states never to use US cleaners on diamonds with large or eye-visible inclusions. My US cleaner came with a watch bridge, so I can use it safely on my diamond watchband without risk of damaging my (not waterproof, but it IS shockproof) diamond watch. Whether your US cleaner uses heat or not, I prefer to be safe and follow these guidelines. I have read that you should never put costume jewelry in either, as glue is often used and vibrations and/or heat can dissolve glue. However, I always ask my jeweler before putting any piece in my US cleaner. When tanzanite was more available, I purchased many pieces, but had never owned any. Thank goodness I asked my jeweler first! Whenever I add a new stone to my collection (morganite, kunzite, etc.) I ask my jeweler whether US cleaners (heated or not), I would rather ask my jeweler, as opposed to having regrets later.
