Never the Roses

In "Never the Roses," readers are invited into a vividly enchanting universe driven by the complexities of human emotions and the power of personal growth. The narrative follows Oneira, a young woman liberated from the burden of using her dream magic for warfare, who embarks on a journey through the 'Dream' in search of purpose and connection. This tale intricately weaves themes of grief, isolation, acceptance, and forgiveness, all while juxtaposing the stark realities of life with a whimsical, magical backdrop. The writing is frequently praised for its imaginative world-building and the depth of its characters. Many reviewers found themselves captivated by Oneira's embarked journey and the development of her relationship with a rival sorcerer, which begins with secret correspondence through stolen books. This interaction showcases a charming blend of tension and tenderness that is skillfully executed throughout the story. Emotion plays a central role in "Never the Roses," with several readers highlighting its bittersweet ending that evokes strong feelings—tears among them. Reviewers appreciate that even during the profound emotional exploration, the narrative avoids triggering content, making it accessible for a wide audience. Furthermore, the book successfully balances humor with depth, creating a cozy atmosphere that resonates with readers while still providing significant character development. Despite its many strengths, not all feedback is overwhelmingly positive. Some readers experienced a slow start, nearly abandoning the book before it picked up momentum around the fourth chapter. Additionally, criticisms about pacing and character decisions suggest there might be a tendency for certain story elements to come too easily for the protagonist without adequate conflict or struggle. Overall, "Never the Roses" emerges as a heartfelt exploration of connection and resilience with a rich and immersive narrative that promises to resonate with those who appreciate intricate relationships and thoughtful character arcs. **
