Customer Questions & Answers

  • Question: Does is measure in Brix over 60?

Answer: Using standard Brix-to-Specific Gravity charts, we see that 60° Brix is equivalent to a SG of 1.291, so the hydrometer you have chosen's range easily covers this value, and beyond.
  • Question: Can I use this for Isopropyl Alcohol?

Answer: No, alcohol is always lighter than water, so if you were to use a hydrometer designed to measure Specific Gravity, your SG range would need to be below 1.000. We also have hydrometers specifically designed to measure the % alcohol by volume for isopropyl alcohol.
  • Question: Is this able to measure alcohol content in hand sanitizer? If not, would you have a product that does?

Answer: No, hydrometers do measure density, but even with an % alcohol hydrometer, you could only make a measurement of the alcohol percentage before you mixed the alcohol and aloe together, again for the same viscosity reasons.
  • Question: Can this be used for ceramic glazes?

Answer: No, while the glaze may be heavier than water it is also viscous. Unfortunately a hydrometer isn't designed to measure viscosity.
  • Question: Is this hydrometer used to measure specific gravity for epsom salt concentration in flotation tanks?

Answer: Yes, this hydrometer will work for any solutions with a specific gravity falling between 1.000 and 1.600.
  • Question: Can you use this in a bucket of ceramic glaze to test specific gravity the glaze?

Answer: No, while the glaze may be heavier than water it is also viscous. Unfortunately a hydrometer isn't designed to measure viscosity.

SP Scienceware Hydrometers ‎B61801-7000 Editorial Review

The SP Bel-Art, H-B DURAC 1.0001.600 Specific Gravity Hydrometer for Liquids Heavier Than Water is a useful tool for measuring density. It is not suitable for measuring alcohol content in hand sanitizer or viscous substances like ceramic glazes. However, it can be used to measure the specific gravity of solutions falling between 1.000 and 1.600. Some customers have reported receiving the wrong product or experiencing damage, but overall, the hydrometer works well and is satisfactory.
